EARLY MORNING ROAD TO DOUBTFUL SOUND |
Named by Capt Cook on his Endeavor voyage when he was doubtful he could get in and out with his ship.
Doubtful Sound with its rugged peaks, verdant rainforest and twisting, hidden inlets with endless waterfall simply took our breath away. It is a UNESCO World Heritage area and sits in the heart of Fiordland National Park.
We cruised for an hour across Lake Manapouri to West Arm, mainly in thick cloud and rain, but thats what makes Doubtful Sound so beautiful - the rain.
The a coach trip for an hour over Wilmot Pass through Fiordland's lush rainforest, this road was made by the hydroelectric company as there was no way across.
We then had a three hour cruise exploring Doubtful Sound right out to the Tasman sea. Seals were on a small island just on the edge of the sea with young ones on show.
As we came back we ventured up different arms seeing hundreds of temporary waterfalls, which only appear when it rains as there is no soil up on the mountains for the rain to sink into, so when it rains the waterfalls flow and when it stops - they stop.
We then experienced the "Sound of Silence" when they asked everyone to be quiet and engines were turned off and we just listened to nature! Fabulous!
The coach driver made us laugh when it started raining, that 's not rain its just the cloud sweating!
