WUNDERBAR WALK - LUCKNERHAUS TO STUDLHUTTE, GROSSGLOCKNER

Our best ever hike today, we drove 14 km to Kals high up a narrow valley then drove up and up and up to the Hohe Tauern National park at  Lucknerhaus.
A three hour hike up and two hours back, 10 km total and the most amazing trail. We hiked first to Lucknerhutte where we managed a coffee, then up to Studlhutte, set high on a saddle with Grossglockner so close and looking almost possible to climb.
So amazing to get so close, we were at the other side of Grossglockner from the other day on the Hochalpenstrasse.
Stunning flowers, crystal clear rivers, snow fields and glorious sunshine, we could not ask for more!

MATREI IN OSTTIROL

Another stunning day weather wise, not so stunning car wise. We left our site to drive the short distance to Kals but just before we went through the Felbertauern  tunnel, about 5 miles long and costing 11 Euros, Roy noticed the DPF light on in car, which we only had fixed just before coming away and then the engine light came on. We turned back and found a campsite at Matrei in Osttirol, a beautiful place surrounded by mountains but in the main valley, tried to find a garage but it was closed so we left van and drove 157 miles to Lienz to Nissan garage which was almost closed. The man who did not speak English looked at the lights and said come back Monday at 8am. Well we think that's what he said! My brother Jim who lives in France was great very helpful with our Aldi diagnostic tool but it didn't work so roll on Monday. Meanwhile there are worse places to be stuck in!

EDENGARTEN CAMPING MATREI IN OSTTIROL

Next day we decided to drive to Lienz again and try to buy the additive, with help from Brother and Sister in law in France we found shop it was open and sold the additive, we did what we were supposed to do and crossed our fingers came back to site and went off to gondola to take us higher to do a walk, it was closed with sign we thought said closed Sat/Sun. We took off up the hills out of Matrei following a map, we got lost, we had lunch at a beautiful shaded bench with views, we got lost again, we went up some more and finally found where we were. Chatted with some folk from Nottingham who said cable car not closed, only restaurant! A good walk anyway.

LOVE THESE SHRINES WHICH ARE ALL OVER THE MOUNTAINS

MOOSERBODEN AND WASSERFALLBODEN

Our 27th wedding anniversary, we drove 15 mins up the mountain to an 11 storey car park hidden in the trees and built over a waterfall. From here we took a bus higher up the mountains to an amazing lift then another bus ride even higher through long tunnels through the mountains to arrive at two spectacular reservoirs Wasserfallboden the lower one and Mosserboden the one the bus took us to. You couldn't drive any of this and it was all for free. We had the summer card which most campsites in Germany and Austria give you for reductions but in this case all free!
Had a  lovely walk up to a viewpoint for lunch then wandered back along the meadows to Furthermoar Alm for kaffee and kuchen, then got the bus and lift back. A magical day as we had no idea what it entailed till we got there.
