What a superb hike, the weather was
not good, temperature about freezing at the refuge and very low cloud
with occasional snow flurries but lots of interesting things to see.

A MARMOT A DAY! |
The cows were still in the high
valleys and the herdsman and his dog were moving them, which when we
came back down seemed a waste of time as he had gone home and the
cows had wandered back down. We next saw hundreds of sheep and then
came across a modern day shepherd with five dogs. The sheep dogs
seemed OK with us but he had three big white dogs, which he called
loup ( wolves) and they barked and howled round us, trying to protect
the sheep, Roy said!
We thought we were alone on the hike
but as we neared the refuge we saw about 30 people in the distance
going the other way!

REFUGE FOND D'AUSSOIS |
Got to the the refuge and there were
three workmen eating enormous meals and drinking wine, the digger
outside silent!
We had brought sandwiches to eat but
they had soup on the menu, so she brought us a huge bowlful with lots
of bread – delicious.
As we left the refuge the group of
kids we had seen arrived. The teacher told me they were from an
agricultural college and were here to see the types of jobs available
in the Vanoise. They had a talk from the Ranger and talked with the
shepherd. So shepherd, Ranger or working in the Refuges was the job
choices!
They had cut their walk short as
weather not good – we thought it was wonderful, we didn't get wet,
that's my main moan when hiking.
